Why a black box isn't enough to redact a PDF
A document goes out with names hidden under neat black bars, and someone copies the text right back out. The redaction looked final. It wasn’t. Can a redacted PDF be unredacted? If the black box was only drawn on top, yes. It’s a common mistake, and an avoidable one.
A black box is a sticker, not a shredder
In many PDFs, a black rectangle is just another object drawn on top of the page. The text, the image, or the vector layer underneath is still there in the file. Copy and paste from the “redacted” area, open the file in an editor, or pull out the raw content, and the hidden data comes right back. The same goes for blur, pixelation, and mosaic effects. They can be reversed, and with enough effort, sometimes very little, the original can be rebuilt from the blurred pixels.
The lesson is simple: if the sensitive content still exists anywhere in the exported file, the redaction is cosmetic.
How Dress Docs removes what you cover
When you cover something in Dress Docs, you’re not stacking an object someone can later peel off. On export, each page is flattened into an image with your covers baked in. Text, layers, and any hidden objects under a cover are gone, because they no longer exist as separate data. What lands in the file is a picture of the page, with your covers where the sensitive content used to be.
Two deliberate choices make this hold:
- No blur, no pixelate, no mosaic. Those obscure without removing, and anything that can be reversed eventually is. The default cover is solid black, so what it covers is replaced, not obscured.
- Flatten on the way out. The original page structure is collapsed into a flat image, so there’s nothing underneath to dig out.
That’s the method: remove the underlying content, don’t just hide it.
What this means for you
You don’t have to trust that a viewer will respect the black box. There’s nothing under the box to reveal. Cover what shouldn’t show, export, and the covered content can’t be recovered: not by the recipient, not by anyone with the file.
Redaction should be a one-way operation. Dress Docs makes it one.
Then check what else the file carries: the metadata you forget to remove.
