Remove metadata from a PDF before you send it
You cover the names, you black out the account numbers, you export. The visible content is clean. And yet the file can still give you away, not through anything you can see, but through the data your software quietly wrote around the content. Here’s what hides in your files, and how to remove metadata from a PDF or an image before you send it.
What’s actually hidden in your files
Two invisible layers travel with almost every document:
- Image metadata (EXIF/XMP/IPTC). A photo or scan can carry the camera model, the GPS coordinates where it was taken, the date and time, the editing software, and sometimes a thumbnail of the original image from before your edits.
- PDF document metadata. PDFs record the app that made the file, creation and modification dates, an author field, and a hidden ID: a fingerprint that can link two files to the same source document.
None of this shows up when you look at the page. All of it is readable by anyone who opens the file with the right tool. A location, an author’s name, the real timeline of a document: all of it can travel in metadata the sender never checked.
How to remove metadata from a PDF
In Dress Docs, removing metadata is part of redacting, not an afterthought. It happens every time you export:
- Images start fresh. Each page is exported as a new, flat image, so the EXIF, XMP, and IPTC data from the original doesn’t make it into the output. There’s no old camera or GPS data to carry over.
- PDF fields are blanked. On PDF export, the producer, creation date, modification date, author, and creator fields are cleared, and the hidden ID is zeroed out. That last step matters: two exports of the same document come out byte-for-byte identical, so the file carries no fingerprint linking it back to a source.
Clean means clean
Good redaction isn’t only about what you cover. It’s about everything the file remembers that you didn’t put there on purpose. Dress Docs removes that hidden layer every time, so the document you send says exactly what you meant it to say, and nothing else.
